Sherwood Primary School

Sherwood Primary School is situated in the leafy suburb of Sherwood , Durban and is a state school. We cater for learners from Grade R to Grade 7 . Our core business is EDUCATION and we aim to develop the HOLISTIC child , preparing them for the future.  We work in a clean , litter-free environment which we share with our fauna and flora.

VISION FOR SHERWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL

Sherwood Primary School has a vision of being a Christian South African school, which aims at enabling its learners to achieve their full potential. The emphasis at the School is for all learners to enjoy and progress in the academic, sporting and cultural arenas.  It is our intention to fulfil this vision in time through the following means:

  • Giving our learners a sound educational foundation, by striving for excellence in teaching and learning, thereby preparing the learners for life in its broadest context. i.e. academically, socially and spiritually.
  • To encourage excellence among the educators at the School by continuing to attract and retain the best educators available and recognising the professional responsibilities of educators.
  • By maintaining a Christian ethos and applying Christian values whilst at all times respecting all other religions and cultures, the School aims at providing a firm foundation for personal stability, security and accountability which will enable the learners to lead productive and purposeful lives in society.
  • The School aims at serving the community within which it is situated and therefore does not unfairly discriminate on any grounds whatsoever.
  • To encourage parental/guardian involvement in the activities and management of the school by providing parents/guardians with regular feedback on matters pertaining to the school through School and Governing Body newsletters.

Sherwood Primary School Governing Body

STATEMENT OF INTENT

The members of the Governing Body recognize and acknowledge that sound and equitable relations between parents and professional teaching staff are essential for the promotion of goodwill, the educational well-being of the learners and the long-term viability of the School.

  1. To this end, the Members declare their common commitment to following objectives:

  2. To provide well founded, quality education that focuses on the personal development of each pupil and provides opportunity for intellectual, physical, cultural and religious development.

  3. To foster the partnership on which good education is based between school and home, between parent, educator and learner, through commitment and co-operation.

  4. To maintain and develop a work environment, both in the classroom and outside, which is compatible with good education, the satisfaction of educators’ professional needs and offering harmony and stability.

  5. To preserve the traditional values, standards and individual character of the School, whilst adapting constructively to the changes that occur.

  6. To maintain and develop educational facilities at Sherwood that are non-discriminatory catering for all learners able to benefit from the education on offer.

  7. To deal with one another with fairness and justice, and in a spirit of mutual   understanding trust and respect.

  8. To endeavour to provide to each other as Members of the Governing Body’  information that is relevant and necessary for effective decision-making and for the successful functioning of the Governing Body and the School.

Section 2

1. The Religious Curriculum

Not with standing the underlying Christian ethos on which the school is based no learner will be unfairly discriminated against on the grounds of religion. Religious education is a life skills learning area, which should help learners to understand and respect diverse religions and develop a moral standing in life.

1.1 Religious education will therefore include the following:

  • Developing respect for all religions
  • Developing knowledge of customs, rituals, and religious celebrations of different religions and cultures.
  • Developing good morals and sound values.

2. School Uniform

2.1  All learners will be required to wear the specified school uniform of Sherwood Primary School and respect the school rules as this is an integral part of the identity and ethos of the school.

2.2  The school is sensitive to the symbolism of diverse cultures and religions and will allow religious or cultural objects to be worn provided that:

  • it is not contrary to the safety of the learner concerned or to other learners or staff.
  • that it is not offensive to other religions and cultures.
  • that it is discreet.
  • that it is an essential item and not merely being worn as decorative jewelry.
  • that parents I guardians take full responsibility for loss or damage of such objects.

2.3 In the event of an objection, the parent of the learner must write to the Governing Body of the school, requesting a waiver of the rules. A priest or minister of the religion concerned must support this request, explaining the importance and necessity of the request. The Governing Body of the School will then consider the request.

3. Assemblies

Assemblies at the school, despite the underlying Christian ethos, will promote and develop respect for diverse religions and a moral standing in life. The school’s morning assembly forms a very important part of the curriculum and therefore learners may not be excused from assembly on religious grounds.

Assemblies have the following focus and purposes:
  • To create unity and pride in the school
  • To impart information to learners.
  • To make awards and announcements
  • To teach general sound moral values such as equity, tolerance, honesty and social honour.

4. Language

4.1 Fundamental Principles and Legal Stipulations In accordance with the South African School’s Act, No 84 of 1996 section 3

a. A learner in a public school shall have the right to instruction in the language of his or her choice where this is reasonably practicable.
b. No learner at a public school may be penalised for expressing him/herself in a language that is not the official language of the particular school.
c. Language ability tests may not be used as an admission requirement to learners at a public school

4.2 Official Languages of the School

4.2.1 The Governing Body of our school have, in consensus with the requirements of the law decided that the language of instruction at Sherwood Primary shall be English, however, every effort will be made, using the resources available, to accommodate learners whose home language is not English.

4.2.2 Afrikaans and isiZulu shall be given equal status as additional second languages.
